Caterpillar Container Forklifts - Particularly Designed to Load and Unload Huge, Heavy Freight Containers
Container Forklift
A container forklift is specifically designed to unload and load large, heavy freight containers. They are utilized to shuttle freight off and on truck beds, trains and ships. Container forklifts are the largest and most sturdy types of forklifts manufactured. They need to be extremely maneuverable on uneven terrain and have enough torque and power to raise large containers safely. Typically, they have heavy-duty diesel engines and large pneumatic tires.
Like all types of forklifts, a container forklift utilizes forks in order to lift the containers. Forks must be positioned to make sure the load is secure during transport. Various container forklift models are just designed to lift the containers several meters off the ground. Other container handlers utilize a different method for carrying containers to greater heights. A container handler uses a device attached to the front of the vehicle to clamp down on either end of the container like jaws. The machinery is counterbalanced with weights to be able to maintain stability.
Lifting and transferring containers is the main purpose of a container forklift. Standard forklifts do not have enough reach for working in ports. The forks are rated based on the most weight they could handle. The forklift's capabilities should be posted prominently in the cockpit and should never be exceeded.
Caterpillar Pneumatic Tire Forklifts
Use a Pneumatic Forklift
Pneumatic forklifts are common in shipping and warehouse operations. Also called pump trucks or pallet trucks, they are used so as to transport products and materials around on wooden pallets using metal forks mounted on a wheeled counterweight. The counterweight includes a pump which raises the forks off the ground. A pallet truck is designed to be operated by one individual.
Pallet trucks must be operated carefully to avoid loss of control while lifting heavy loads. Machine must be checked prior to operating. Clear the wheels area of any obstacle. Make certain that the handle turns smoothly. The pallet must be stacked carefully to ensure that nothing would fall off during transportation.
On the end of the pallet truck's handle, squeeze the level located on the inside of the metal loop to be able to lower the forks and release the air in the pump. The forks can then be pushed into the pallet slots. The forks must be centered to be able to ensure equal distribution of the pallet's weight across them. Lift the forks from the ground by pumping the pneumatic lift's handle until the pallet has fully cleared the ground. Do not raise the pallet very high or the forklift can unbalance.
Pull on the handle and then drag it behind you if you want to move the pallet. It is not safe to push the pallet in front of you because the momentum could cause it to go out of control. Slowly take turns and don't try to stop abruptly. Stop gradually, squeeze the lever, and the forks would lower to the ground. Finally, remove the forks from the pallet by pulling them out. Return the pallet truck to its permanent location.
